FACIS stands for Federation Architecture for Composed Infrastructure Services. But it also implies the latin word FACERE, meaning DOING – ENABLING.
FACIS is at the forefront of shaping the future of digital ecosystems, addressing critical challenges in interoperability, governance, and the increasing demand for flexible, decentralized infrastructures. By combining cutting-edge technologies like Federation Architecture Patterns (FAPs), machine-readable Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and low-code solutions with robust Governance Frameworks, FACIS fosters a seamless Multi-Provider Cloud-Edge Continuum.
This approach ensures enhanced scalability, security, and compliance while empowering organizations to retain control over their data. FACIS also champions open-source innovation, promoting transparency and inclusivity within Europe’s digital landscape. By enabling seamless collaboration between diverse providers and users, FACIS is paving the way for scalable, innovative, and sovereign cloud-edge solutions and their seamless integration across cloud-edge environments.
Discover how FACIS is transforming the digital future by creating federated ecosystems that are innovative, secure, and sovereign.
Key Deliverables of FACIS
SLA Governance Framework
- Development of an SLA Governance Framework
- Development of machine-readable and automated Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for multi-provider environments
- Enable bundled provisioning of services across providers, enhancing collaboration in cooperative data ecosystems
At a Glance
Innovative approach: Building an SLA Governance Framework that ensures service quality, security, and interoperability between different providers. Introduction of machine-readable SLAs that enable automatic monitoring and adaptation to meet dynamic service requirements.
Unique selling point: The combination of governance, technical standards and legally compliant digital contracts creates a unique basis for flexible, scalable multi-provider cloud-edge solutions.
Digital Contracting Services
- Creation of a FOSS-based Digital Contracting Service supporting European Digital Identity (EUDI) standards for secure and compliant transactions
At a Glance
Innovative approach: Combination of Digital Contracting and European Digital Identity (EUDI)
Unique selling point: The linking of federated data ecosystems with a Europe-wide standardized identity technology is groundbreaking and promotes Europe’s digital sovereignty.
Federation Architecture Patterns (FAPs)
- FAPs extend the long-established Enterprise Architecture Patterns (EAPs) with specific solutions for collaborative data ecosystems
- Innovative, orchestrated design patterns for federated service groups, enabling interoperability across, e.g., compute, data, identity, and trust services using open-source tools
- All FAPs are published as open-source components to promote use and further development by the community
At a Glance
Innovative approach: Development and application of Federation Architecture Patterns (FAPs) for the standardized design of federated data ecosystems.
Unique selling point: The FAPs provide directly implementable blueprints as well as options for rapid adaptation of the FAPs for collaborative data ecosystems, based on open standards and best practices.
Low-Code Engine for Orchestration
- Development of a dynamic platform to simplify the management and scaling of multi-provider applications in real-time environments
In addition to technical development, the validation of these solutions in real-life scenarios also plays a major role.
The practical application of the project results will be tested in proof-of-concept projects to demonstrate their feasibility in various domains.
8ra/IPCEI-CIS
The FACIS project is part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest – Cloud Infrastructure and Services (8ra/IPCEI-CIS) initiative, which aims to establish a Multi-Provider Cloud-Edge Continuum across Europe. This refers to a cloud ecosystem designed to revolutionize data processing in the next generation of cloud and edge infrastructure and services. The initiative represents a united European effort and stands under a common governance mandated by the community of industrial partners and member states.
